Our History
A Legacy of Excellence in Construction
LTA’s story began in 1965 when it was established as the holding company for industry-leading firms, including James Thompson, Lewis Construction, Steeledale Reinforcing and Trading Company, and AMCO. This merger began a new era in South Africa’s construction industry, combining decades of expertise and innovation under one banner.
Our roots, however, trace back to 1889, when James Thompson, a master carpenter and builder, founded his business in Johannesburg. Renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship with fine wood and stone, Thompson quickly gained recognition for his impeccable quality. Within six years, he employed over 70 carpenters and earned the praise of Sir Herbert Baker, who called him “the best builder in South Africa.” Thompson’s legacy includes iconic projects such as Grey’s University College, The Reserve Bank, and The Appeal Court.
In 1907, Thompson expanded his business by opening a branch in Bloemfontein while serving as the mayor of Johannesburg. His commitment to quality and innovation laid the foundation for LTA—a company dedicated to excellence, sustainability, and transformative infrastructure.
